Human Growth and Development / Unit 2 HGD 0206 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Stage Three: The Placenta
Captions available
The idea
The third stage of labour is the delivery of the placenta, the afterbirth, usually within about half an hour of the birth.
In practice
The placenta expelled minutes after the baby, and checked for completeness.
Where people slip
A retained placenta carries risks of infection and haemorrhage, which is why its delivery is watched.
