The idea
The first stage of labour, the longest, lasts until the cervix has dilated to about ten centimetres, while it also thins, called effacement.
In practice
Contractions growing from half a minute every fifteen minutes to a minute every few minutes.
Where people slip
It can take about twelve to sixteen hours with a first child and less in later births.
