Generative AI at Work / Unit 3 GAI 068 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Showing the Format With Examples
The idea
When the shape of the output matters, examples in the prompt are, in the DAIR.AI guide's words, very effective at getting it.
In practice
Step one: decide the exact format you need, field by field. Step two: write two or three short examples that follow it exactly, field for field, using made-up or approved sample data rather than real records. Step three: make the examples different from each other in content, so the model learns the format and does not copy the content. Step four: put the real request last, in the same layout as the examples, with the answer left blank.
Where people slip
The model copies the examples closely, including their mistakes and their length, so check them as carefully as you would check the output.
