Changing One Thing at a Time
The idea
Because the DAIR.AI guide treats prompting as experimentation, this course adds a working rule: change one part of the prompt at a time, so you know what made the difference.
In practice
Step one: keep the current prompt and its outputs as the baseline. Step two: change a single element, the instruction, the context, the examples or the format, and nothing else. Step three: rerun the same test cases as before and compare the new outputs against the criteria. Step four: keep the change if it helped, undo it if it did not, note the result, and only then try the next one.
Where people slip
Generated outputs vary even when nothing changes, so judge a change across several test cases, never a single run.
