The idea
Research falls into three main kinds: descriptive, which reports a variable; correlational, which tests whether variables are related; and experimental, which tests cause.
In practice
A count of absences; absences set against grades; then an attendance program tried at random.
Where people slip
Only the experiment, which assigns people to conditions at random, can show cause; many variables cannot be manipulated at all.
