Observation

The idea

Observation records behavior directly, either naturalistically, in the natural setting with no control, or in a laboratory, where confounds can be controlled at a cost.

In practice

An observer tallies how often students ask questions during ordinary lessons.

Where people slip

People change their behavior when they know they are watched, the Hawthorne effect, which laboratory observation cannot remove.
