Tests and Constructs

The idea
Tests measure constructs, traits, states, attitudes and abilities that cannot be observed directly, and a good test is standardized: administered, scored and analyzed identically for everyone.
In practice
A self-esteem scale, an aptitude test and a heart-rate reading each measure a construct differently.
Where people slip
Standardization is what lets one person's score be compared fairly with another's.
