What a P-Value Says
Captions available
The idea
A p-value is the probability of results at least this extreme if chance alone were at work; by convention, under point zero five counts as significant.
In practice
By chance alone, a gain this large would appear fewer than once in a hundred tries.
Where people slip
It is not the probability that the hypothesis is true, nor that chance alone produced the data.
