The idea
A correlation coefficient, r, runs from minus one to plus one: its size gives the strength of a relationship and its sign gives the direction.
In practice
Height and weight rise together; tiredness falls as sleep rises; shoe size and sleep are unrelated.
Where people slip
Correlations allow prediction, which is how admissions offices use test scores and grades.
