The idea
An enzyme-linked receptor has an intracellular domain that is itself an enzyme or binds one directly; a receptor tyrosine kinase phosphorylates tyrosine residues once ligand binding causes dimerization.
In practice
A signaling molecule binding two nearby receptor tyrosine kinases makes them pair up and phosphorylate each other's tails.
Where people slip
Phosphorylation follows dimerization — an unpaired receptor tyrosine kinase does not activate alone.
