G-Protein-Linked Receptors
Captions available
The idea
A G-protein-linked receptor crosses the membrane seven times and, once bound by ligand, activates a separate G-protein that relays the signal to an ion channel or enzyme.
In practice
Every such receptor shares this seven-pass structure, though its ligand-binding site and G-protein partner differ by cell type.
Where people slip
The receptor itself does not carry out the response — it only switches the G-protein on.
