An ion channel-linked receptor opens a membrane channel when its ligand binds, letting specific ions flow through down their concentration gradient.

A ligand binding a gated channel triggers a conformational change that lets sodium or calcium ions pass through until the ligand releases.

The channel stays closed by default — it opens only while the ligand remains bound, not permanently once triggered.
