Captions available

The idea

On International Women's Day in February nineteen seventeen, women workers in Petrograd protested bread prices. Within days the demands were peace and the tsar's removal; a general strike followed. The army refused to fire and joined, and in early March Nicholas abdicated.

In practice

"As in every revolution since seventeen eighty-nine", the anchor says.

Where people slip

The city was Petrograd; the anchor says St. Petersburg.
