The idea
In January nineteen oh-five, with the Japanese war still running, workers marched to the Winter Palace to petition their Little Father. Troops fired, and around a thousand died, the witness says. Strikes spread nationwide, and radicals held neighborhoods of Petersburg and Moscow.
In practice
The anchor counts a hundred thousand petitioners.
Where people slip
The anchor puts it after the defeat; it was during.
