Nicholas II: The Last Autocrat

Captions available

The idea

Nicholas II, tsar from eighteen ninety-four, held complete authority over politics and the Church; the tsars alone had resisted modernity. Modernity reached him through war twice, against Japan in nineteen oh-four and Germany in nineteen fourteen. Defeat in the first was blamed on his backwardness and indecision.
