Mesopotamia and the Arab Revolt

Captions available

The idea

In nineteen sixteen Britain turned to Mesopotamia, and the sharif of Mecca's Arab Revolt, aided by T. E. Lawrence, cut Ottoman railways. Britain promised an independent Arab state and secretly, in the Sykes-Picot agreement, divided the region with France. By nineteen seventeen Ottoman collapse looked certain.

In practice

The Balfour Declaration, a third promise, nineteen seventeen.

Where people slip

Witness-named; the anchor has "an Arab insurgency".
