Western Civilization II / Unit 14   WC2 1328 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Mandates, and Atatürk's Turkey

Captions available

The idea

The Ottoman lands became League mandates: Syria and Lebanon to France, Iraq, Palestine and Transjordan to Britain, no inhabitants consulted. Iraq became independent in nineteen thirty-two. Sèvres in nineteen twenty partitioned Anatolia; Mustafa Kemal's armies forced Lausanne in twenty-three and a Turkish republic, its minorities expelled or destroyed.

In practice

Atatürk, "father of the Turks".

Where people slip

The anchor's nineteen thirty-nine for Iraq is corrected.
