Western Civilization II / Unit 14   WC2 1329 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The League of Nations: Weak, and Without America

Captions available

The idea

Wilson's League was to prevent aggression and honor self-determination. It had no army, handed territories to the imperial powers, and did nothing when Japan took Manchuria in nineteen thirty-one. The American Senate, fearing it would lose the power to declare war, refused to join. Its architect stayed out.

In practice

"Pitiful", the anchor's verdict.

Where people slip

The verdict is attributed; Lodge led the refusal.
