The idea

At Verdun from February nineteen sixteen Germany attacked to bleed France; the anchor counts five hundred forty thousand French and four hundred thirty thousand German casualties. On the Somme from the first of July Britain lost tens of thousands the first day, four hundred twenty thousand by November.

In practice

"The war had won", the anchor says.

Where people slip

Figures are the anchor's; Lumen 2 agrees.
