The Dialogue, the Trial of 1633, and the Index

The idea
His Dialogue of sixteen thirty-two let a heliocentrist win every argument against Simplicio, whom Pope Urban VIII took as himself. Tried by the Inquisition in sixteen thirty-three for a condemned doctrine, not heresy as such, Galileo recanted; the book sat on the Index until eighteen twenty-two.
In practice
Religious war as the trial's backdrop, the anchor says.
Where people slip
The name suggests simple-mindedness.
