Sequencing the Thirty Years' War's Four Phases

Captions available

The idea

The exam gives events of the Thirty Years' War and asks their order, and the anchor's structure is four phases by the power that entered. Bohemian, sixteen eighteen to twenty-five, from the Defenestration to White Mountain. Danish, sixteen twenty-five to twenty-nine, Christian IV crushed and the Edict of Restitution. Swedish, sixteen thirty to thirty-five, Gustavus from Breitenfeld to his death. French, sixteen thirty-five to forty-eight, Bourbon against Habsburg to Westphalia.

In practice

Place seven events. The Defenestration: Bohemian, the start. Frederick of the Palatinate elected: Bohemian, right after. White Mountain in sixteen twenty: Bohemian, the end of that phase. Restitution in sixteen twenty-nine: Danish, the end of the second. Breitenfeld in sixteen thirty-one and Gustavus's death in thirty-two: Swedish. Wallenstein's murder in thirty-four: Swedish, the last event before France. Westphalia: French, the end. Read: Defenestration, Frederick, White Mountain, Christian IV, Restitution, Gustavus lands, Breitenfeld, Gustavus dies, Wallenstein, France enters, Westphalia.

Where people slip

The phases are named for who entered, not who won, and the Catholics won the first two. And Richelieu's money arrived in sixteen thirty, five years before French troops, so a question dating French involvement to thirty-five is half right.
