Vesalius and Harvey: The Body Observed

Captions available

The idea

Medicine still followed Galen's four humors and bled the sick. Andreas Vesalius, fifteen fourteen to sixty-four, a Fleming at Padua, published anatomy from cadavers; William Harvey, fifteen seventy-eight to sixteen fifty-seven, showed the heart pumps blood in circulation, not the liver.

In practice

Renaissance drawing and print made anatomy shareable.

Where people slip

Both rest on the anchor; the anchor calls Vesalius Italian. Contagion stayed unexplained.
