The idea
The book works one online lending system through all four causes, and the same order works for any system.
In practice
Step one, final cause: say why the system exists. The lender wants customers to apply online, decisions to come faster, manual errors to fall, and lending rules to be met. Step two, efficient cause: say who builds and runs it. Here that is a product team, two-week sprints and a deployment pipeline. Step three, formal cause: describe its shape. There are services for applications, credit checks, decisions and notifications, with data flowing from intake to decision to letter. Step four, material cause: list what it is made of. The book's list is the Loan Application, Applicant, Credit Report, Income Document, Risk Score, Loan Offer, Decision Record and Audit Log Entry.
Where people slip
Most teams can answer the first three steps fluently. The fourth is where hesitation shows, and hesitation marks the material that is undefined.
