Four Questions for Any Meeting

The idea

The book's closing philosophy chapter turns the four causes into four questions that can steady any confused meeting.

In practice

In the book's example, a design review has run long, and three groups are arguing for three different changes. Step one: someone asks what thing the decision is recorded in. That is material cause. Step two: how is that thing shaped in the data? That is formal cause. Step three: who and what act on it today? That is efficient cause. Step four: what is it actually for? That is final cause. In the book's example, nobody can answer the fourth question the same way, and the meeting ends with an agreement to write the purpose down before anyone writes code.

Where people slip

The questions work without anyone mentioning Aristotle. Asked in this order, they move the argument from opinions about features to facts about one thing.
