The M-CaReM-AI Method: Defining Work for AI / Unit 2 MCM 042 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
The Four-Causes Exercise
The idea
The book's practice exercise takes one important thing through the four causes with a small group, to find where its definition is fuzzy.
In practice
Step one: pick one thing, such as a Case, a Claim, an Order or an Incident. Step two, final cause: ask why it exists and what would be missing without it, and write three to five points. Step three, efficient cause: ask who creates it, who updates it, and which processes and integrations touch it. Step four, formal cause: sketch what it connects to and who its neighbors are. Step five, material cause: ask which fields it must have to be valid, which states it can be in, and which relationships it must always have. Step six: watch closely where people hesitate or disagree, and write those points down.
Where people slip
The hesitations are the result. They show exactly where the material cause is fuzzy today, which is where the next phases start.
