The idea
The lungs are paired organs joined to the trachea by the right and left bronchi and resting on the diaphragm.
In practice
The right lung has three lobes, superior, middle and inferior; the left has two, superior and inferior, separated by fissures.
Where people slip
A surgeon may remove a single lobe, an operation called a lobectomy.
