Robotic-Assisted Surgery

Captions available

The idea

In robotic-assisted surgery, the surgeon controls robotic arms that hold the instruments, usually through a laparoscopic approach.

In practice

Learn the parts of the system in order. First, the surgeon's console, from which the surgeon controls the arms and views a three-dimensional image of the field. Second, the robotic arms, which hold the camera and instruments and offer a wide range of motion through articulating instrument heads. Third, the interchangeable instruments, which the bedside team changes as the surgeon requests. Fourth, the video system shared with the team. Fifth, the bedside team, including the scrub person, who prepares and drapes the system and manages instruments at the patient's side.

Where people slip

The surgeon may be across the room at the console, so communication with the bedside team must be clear and spoken. The bedside team watches the patient directly while the surgeon watches the screen.
