Capacitive Coupling in Laparoscopy

The idea
In laparoscopy, electrosurgical current can pass from an insulated instrument into nearby metal or tissue without direct contact, an effect called capacitive coupling.
In practice
Using the lowest effective setting, avoiding activation in open air, and avoiding mixed metal and plastic ports all reduce the risk.
Where people slip
Such burns may happen out of the camera's view, which is why prevention matters.
