The Camera and Light
The idea
The camera, lens and light source let the surgeon see inside the body during minimally invasive surgery.
In practice
Learn the components in order. First, the camera is the handheld component that connects to the lens and has settings for focus and white balance. Second, lenses come in several viewing angles, to see structures from different directions, and may need defogging during the case. Third, the light source sends light through a fiber-optic cable to the lens to illuminate the field. Fourth, the image appears on monitors positioned for the surgical team. Fifth, the light cable carries intense light, and its tip can become hot enough to scorch drapes or burn skin.
Where people slip
Connect the light cable to the scope before switching it on, switch it off before disconnecting, and never lay a lit cable on the drapes. A scorched drape is a near miss for a fire.
