The idea
Trocars are the ports placed through the abdominal wall through which laparoscopic instruments are inserted.
In practice
A trocar has a cannula, a seal and an obturator; trocars come in several sizes and are also used to remove specimens.
Where people slip
Ports and their parts are small items, so they are counted or tracked as facility policy directs.
