Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 22   TSC 535 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Sponging the Field

Captions available

The idea

Sponges absorb blood and fluid from the field so the surgeon can see, and every sponge used is a counted item.

In practice

Used sponges are bagged in counted multiples so they stay visible; small dissecting sponges stay in a basin or container.

Where people slip

The scrub person knows how many sponges are in the wound at every moment.
