Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 22 TSC 533 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Providing Exposure
The idea
Exposure means giving the surgeon a clear view of and access to the area being worked on, using retraction, light, suction and sponges.
In practice
Follow how exposure is built and kept. First, retractors are chosen for the depth and tissue, and placed correctly without harming surrounding tissue. Second, tissue and organs are handled gently. Third, the light is adjusted, by the unsterile team, to fall on the work. Fourth, blood and fluid are cleared with suction or sponges. Fifth, the team coordinates, so retraction moves with the surgeon's needs. Retractors are also inspected for wear and damage.
Where people slip
Retractors held too hard or too long can injure tissue. The first assistant usually manages retraction, and the scrub person helps when asked, without losing sight of the field and the counts.
