Why Retraction Matters
Captions available
The idea
Retractors hold tissue and organs aside so the surgeon can see and reach the operative site.
In practice
They come in two main kinds: handheld retractors, held by the surgeon or an assistant, and self-retaining retractors, which hold themselves open with a frame or ratchet.
Where people slip
Retraction is placed with care, because a retractor pressing too hard can injure the tissue it protects.
