Common Nonabsorbable Materials

Captions available

The idea

Several nonabsorbable materials are common in surgery, each with its own handling and uses.

In practice

Learn them as comparisons. First, nylon is a synthetic monofilament with high tensile strength and little inflammation. Second, polypropylene is a very inert synthetic monofilament, slippery and with memory, so it needs extra throws. Third, polyester, often braided, is strong and less slippery than monofilaments. Fourth, silk is natural, braided, easy to handle and tie, but more reactive, and it slowly loses strength over months. Fifth, steel is very strong and permanent, and it cannot serve as a place for infection to take hold, which is one of its stated advantages.

Where people slip

Nonabsorbable does not always mean removable. Many nonabsorbable sutures are buried and stay in place for life, so the surgeon's choice reflects what the tissue needs long-term.
