The idea
Suture materials are either natural, such as gut and silk, or synthetic, such as nylon, polypropylene and polyglactin.
In practice
Gut is made from animal intestine, so an allergic reaction is possible; synthetic materials generally cause less tissue reaction.

A patient's allergies are checked before any natural material is opened.
