Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 20   TSC 478 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Monofilament and Multifilament

Captions available

The idea

Suture is made either as a single strand, called monofilament, or as many strands braided together, called multifilament or braided.

In practice

Both absorbable and nonabsorbable sutures come in monofilament and braided forms; braided sutures tend to handle and knot more easily.

Where people slip

Ask which form the surgeon wants; the card often specifies it.
