Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 19 TSC 452 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Recognizing a Break
The idea
Recognizing a break means knowing which events contaminate a sterile field, so they are spotted the moment they happen.
In practice
Learn the common breaks in order. First, a sterile item touching anything unsterile, such as a gown sleeve brushing an unsterile surface. Second, moisture soaking through a drape or package from an unsterile area. Third, a hole or tear in a glove, gown, drape or wrapper. Fourth, a sterile item held below the waist or dropping below the table edge. Fifth, a sterile field left unwatched. Sixth, someone reaching over the field. Seventh, an item of doubtful sterility, such as a package with a questionable indicator, reaching the field.
Where people slip
Most breaks are small and quiet, a brush or a drip, not dramatic. Watching for them is a constant habit, not something switched on only at critical moments.
