The idea
In the lateral position, the patient lies on one side, with the operative side up or down depending on the surgery.
In practice
It is used for some hip, kidney and chest procedures; the kidney position is a modified lateral with the table split.
Where people slip
Supports keep the patient from rolling, and the lower arm and leg are padded against pressure.
