Nerve Injuries From Position
Captions available
The idea
Nerves can be injured by compression or stretching during positioning, causing numbness, weakness or even paralysis.
In practice
Common sites include the arms, legs and head, so arms are not overextended on armboards and limbs are padded where nerves lie close to the surface.
Where people slip
Nerve injuries may not show until after the patient wakes, so prevention is the only protection.
