Pressure Points and Padding
The idea
Pressure injuries develop where prolonged pressure falls on bony prominences, and padding and repositioning prevent them.
In practice
Learn the main positioning complications and their prevention in order. First, pressure injuries over bony areas such as heels, elbows and the back: prevented by padding, pressure-relieving devices and repositioning. Second, nerve injuries from compression or stretching: prevented by careful padding and avoiding extreme positions. Third, compartment syndrome, when pressure in a muscle compartment cuts off blood flow: prevented by proper limb alignment and avoiding excessive pressure. Fourth, eye injuries from pressure during head positioning: prevented by eye protection and careful positioning. Fifth, muscle and joint strain: prevented by careful handling and supports.
Where people slip
Long procedures raise the risk of every positioning injury. Skin and padding are checked during the case when possible, and any concern is told to the team at once and documented.
