Transferring the Patient

Captions available

The idea

Moving a patient onto and off the operating table is a moment of risk for the patient and for the staff.

In practice

Follow a safe transfer in order. First, make sure enough staff are present, and add people when equipment is not available or awkward postures cannot be avoided. Second, the anesthesia provider manages the patient's airway throughout. Third, use a lateral transfer device, such as an air mattress, or a powered lift, rather than lifting by hand, and minimize manual lifting. Fourth, move together on a single agreed count. Fifth, once on the table, secure the patient so they cannot fall, and protect lines and tubes during the move.

Where people slip

Falls from the operating table are a recognized positioning complication. A patient who is sedated or anesthetized cannot protect themselves, so the transfer is not rushed and nobody lets go until the patient is secured.
