The idea
Moving patients onto and off the operating table is a major source of back and shoulder injuries for staff.
In practice
Guidance is to minimize manual lifting, use lateral transfer devices such as air mattresses and powered lifts, and add staff when equipment is unavailable.
Where people slip
Good body mechanics alone are not enough to prevent these injuries; equipment and enough hands are.
