Radiation in the OR

Captions available

The idea

Staff are exposed to ionizing radiation when X-ray machines and fluoroscopy units are used during surgery.

In practice

Apply the three principles of radiation protection, plus the equipment that supports them. First, time: keep exposure as short as practical. Second, distance: step as far from the source as the work allows. Third, shielding: use lead or lead-equivalent aprons and thyroid collars, leaded eyewear, and ceiling-mounted or table-mounted shields. Fourth, never place your hands in the primary X-ray beam. Fifth, wear a personal dosimeter, which records your dose over time, where your facility requires it. The goal is to keep exposure as low as reasonably achievable.

Where people slip

Radiation effects may appear years later, and research suggests there is no fully safe level. A properly fitted apron is also an ergonomic matter, because a heavy apron worn for hours strains the back.
