Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 9   TSC 203 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Oxidizers and the Oxygen-Rich Zone

Captions available

The idea

Supplemental oxygen and nitrous oxide make the area around the patient's face and upper body an oxygen-enriched zone.

In practice

The FDA advises the minimum oxygen the patient needs, closed delivery where possible, and clearing oxygen from the field before an ignition source is used.

Where people slip

Risk is highest when an ignition source is used near the oxygen, at the head, neck or upper chest.
