Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 9 TSC 204 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Ignition Sources
Captions available
The idea
Ignition sources in surgery include electrosurgical units, lasers, fiber-optic light cables, drills and burrs, and defibrillators.
In practice
A light cable left lying on drapes can scorch them, so connect it before switching on and switch off before disconnecting.
Where people slip
An active electrosurgical pencil left on the drapes instead of in its holster is a common ignition source.
