The idea
Many hospitals teach fire response with the memory aid RACE: rescue, alarm, contain, extinguish or evacuate.
In practice
Remove people from immediate danger, sound the alarm, close doors to contain smoke and fire, then extinguish the fire if it is safe or evacuate.
Where people slip
Identify a safe way out before approaching any fire, and never let the fire come between you and that exit.
