Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 2 TSC 027 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Bacteria, Viruses and Fungi
Captions available
The idea
Bacteria are single cells; viruses have no cells of their own and multiply only inside a host's cells.
In practice
Antibiotics can kill bacteria or stop them multiplying, but they do not work on viruses; fungi, such as yeasts, are a third group.
Where people slip
An antibiotic given before surgery targets bacteria, which is why it does nothing against a viral illness.
