The Enlightenment and the Public Sphere

Captions available

The idea

The Enlightenment, indebted to the Scientific Revolution and to Muslim, Greek and Indian science, centered on reason and optimism about liberty and rights. It reached a small elite and coexisted with slavery. Coffeehouses, salons, academies and print made a public sphere outside state and church.

In practice

Salons hosted by women, a rare leadership role.

Where people slip
