The Hebrews: Weighing a Text Against the Record

The idea

The anchor sets the Hebrew Bible's narrative beside the archaeological record, and the exam's evidence question is how to weigh them. The text tracks emergence in Canaan, oppression in Egypt and the Exodus, a united monarchy, and conflicts with Assyria and Babylon. The record, the anchor says, does not support Joshua's conquest of Canaan; it does find Solomon's building at Gezer, Hazor and Megiddo; and the migration stories may preserve older traditions about the Hyksos. On religion, the text presents Yahweh's worship as defining from the start; the anchor holds that monotheism developed over centuries under geopolitical pressure, and that Judaism as known today took shape under Persian rule, centered on the temple at Jerusalem, with the Babylonian exile behind it.

In practice

Given a claim from the text and a finding from a dig that disagree, the anchor's method is neither to dismiss the text nor to read it as a chronicle: it is a primary source with author, audience, intent and context. Given "which parts of the biblical account does archaeology support", Solomon's cities. Given "which does it not", Joshua's conquest. Given "when did Judaism take its recognizable shape", under Persia.

Where people slip

This is the anchor's position, voiced as the anchor's; Berger carries no parallel passage. The exam does not ask for a verdict on scripture; it asks how historians treat a text against material evidence.
