The idea
A primary source comes from the period studied; a secondary source is made afterward. Reading one means asking who wrote it, for whom, why, and in what circumstances. Secondary sources start an inquiry and carry bias.
In practice
A king's inscription read for audience and intent before its facts.
Where people slip
The exam tests three abilities: assess evidence, compare, conclude.
